On the winner: “He has been that for a long time (cranky). He walked straight out of here going, no, no I’ll go to the gates, and then stopped up there. Sometimes he can stop two or three times on the way to the gates. He’s going to beat me sooner or later.”

“It’s funny, he’s so reluctant to get there, but then so quick to get home.”

On his team: “Terrific runs both my horses. I’m really happy with what King’s Secret did as well. He’s very much on track because he’s got good improvement to come. And an old marvel, he’s only won one race for me – three times – since he’s been under my care so it’s nice for him to win a different race and a $1 million race. Pretty happy with that.”

On the Everest?: “To be fair to him, he’s had a few goes in Everests and it’s not really his race. The only thing I would say is if on the day it was wet, he’d probably be in the contest, but other than that, running a nice sixth or seventh doesn’t interest me a lot.”

A Wet tracker?: “A true mudlark. He’s an interesting horse. He’s been around a while now and he’s got some intriguing little ways of doing things. But we’ve got a victory there today so I’m very happy.”

“He is a genuinely ‘only female rider’ too. He doesn’t like guys on him at all. Same at home. Kerrie does all the work on him at home, and he just likes girls on his back. He’s a weird cat.”

Where to next: “They could both end up in the Premiere, but I think maybe with King’s Secret he’ll find a bit more improvement off that run than some of the others, so either the Premiere here or the Gilgai down in Melbourne, which his brother won. The Sydney Stakes is a likely race for them both and maybe the Russell Balding as well.”

On his quirks: “If we didn’t have the pony riders he wouldn’t get there. He tried to kick one cantering today which is a new one. He just does things his own way.”


On a lack of pressure: “They should never forget about him. He’s so honest. The whole preparation last prep he was so honest. I know he only tends to win that one race a year. He’s just re-written that now. He deserves another good one. He’s a model of consistency. Even though he gives us hell before the race, he really wants to be there.”

On his age: “He doesn’t know how old he is and don’t tell him. ”

James McDonald (Joliestar): “Sharp race and covered ground. Hit the line well.”

Zac Lloyd (Headwall): “He has gone well. Just an absolute no-affair, they trotted in front, and ran home quick. I thought he was as best from the back as he could have been.”

Adam Hyeronimus (Jokers Grin): “I thought he has gone fantastically. Race shape was probably against him. First time around from a long spell, going this direction, he handled himself really well.”

Taylor Marshall (Spicy Martini): “She ran phenomenally. Found ourselves off the bridle when the sprint came on. Just had us under pressure over the 1100m. 1200m probably a different story to travel more comfortably for longer. She did well to sustain her sprint.”

Jason Collett (Grafterburners): “Copped some interference early. Had a flat spot around the turn. Was getting going late.”

Andrew Adkins (King's Secret): “Brilliant effort once again. Knocked off by the stable mate. He is so honest. He is improving. That will tighten him up even more that run. I love the way he is attacking the line. He has come back even better this preparation. He is backing that up in his races.”

Tyler Schiller (Mal Coupe): “Terrific run. Stuck on really well from a solid spot in the run.”

Dylan Gibbons (Brave One): “I thought he did a good job. He was in a squeeze box early, found the back of Ninja and didn’t let him get too far away. For a horse of his quality he has done a good job.”

Mollie Fitzgerald (Flying For Fun): “She was terrific. Just went back from the gate. Travelled up in amongst them beautifully. She was doing her best work late.”
